This body of work was conceived for the 2023 edition of Strategia Fotografia in collaboration with FMAV, Modena. This work merges american photographer Richard Misrach’s exploration of landscape with themes that have long influenced our practice, particularly the Italian landscape tradition. By utilizing sound, we aimed to create an intimate space for introspection, enhancing the metaphorical aspect of the desert through original soundtracks composed by Giovanni Fiderio. The five stones exhibited were sourced from various Sicilian “deserts,” including the sea, Mount Etna, and the Calanchi del Cannizzola, each symbolizing nature’s majesty and fragility. The featured image of the Centuripe desert evokes the unsettling reality of desertification in Sicily. Through this interplay of photography, the materiality of stones, and sound, we invite visitors to engage in a contemplative experience that bridges memory and imagination, allowing them to construct their own narratives.
