Tra la fine degli anni ’60 e i primi anni ’70 l’artista tedesco Peter Schmidt e Brian Eno stavano lavorando su due progetti molto simili: nel 1970 Schmidt aveva creato The Thoughts Behind the Thoughts, una scatola contenente delle stampe scartate sulle quali aveva scritto delle frasi. Brian Eno, che lo aveva conosciuto pochi anni prima, perseguiva un progetto molto simile, nel quale scriveva delle frasi su delle carte in bambù, e che nel 1974 decide di intitolare Oblique Strategies. Vista la sovrapposizione tra i due progetti, Schmidt ed Eno decidono di unirli e realizzano un’edizione commercializzata alla fine del 1974. Ispirato all’idea di pensiero laterale, Oblique Strategies è un mazzo di carte. Ogni carta riporta una frase che impone all’artista un limite ed è pensata per superare i blocchi creativi.
Ad oggi esistono sei edizioni di Oblique Strategies, diventate oggetti da collezione dopo l’improvvisa scomparsa di Peter Schmidt nel 1980.

In the late 1960s, German artist Peter Schmidt and musician Brian Eno were working on two similar projects: in 1970 Schmidt created The Thoughts Behind the Thoughts, a box with sentences letter printed on discarded prints he had in his studio. Brian Eno, who met Schmidt some years before, was pursuing a similar goal. He wrote sentences on bamboo cards and in 1974 came up with a collection of sentences titled Oblique Strategies. Due to the similarity and partial overlapping of the two projects, Eno and Schmidt combined them and published the first edition of Oblique Strategies in late 1974. Inspired by the principles of lateral thinking, Oblique Strategies consists of a card deck in a black box. Each card reports a sentence with a challenging constraint conceived to help artists overcome creative blocks.
Six editions of Oblique Strategies have been released so far. They have become collectibles after Schmidt’s sudden death in 1980.

Il 6 agosto 2020 Tempest ha comunicato in un post sui suoi profili social la sua identità di genere non-binaria, il suo nuovo nome, e i suoi pronomi they/them, ma quando nel 2017 per la prima volta sentimmo Europe is lost si chiamava ancora Kate.
Rapper, poeta, drammaturga, scrittrice, e performer, quest’anno si è aggiudicata il leone d’argento per il teatro. Scrivono Stefano Ricci e Gianni Forte: “per l’audacia luminosa nel posizionare deflagranti inneschi riflessivi e per voler ancora sperimentare in un genere definito di nicchia, come la poesia, mescolando l’aulico con il basso, la rabbia con la dolcezza degli affetti – tra versi e rime taglienti di shakespeariana memoria e dal forte contenuto sociale, miti classici e ibridazioni hip hop – arrivando a parlare col cuore a un pubblico sempre più vasto, entrandoti fin dentro le ossa, costringendoti a specchiarti nella tua dolorosa intimità”. In Italia le Edizioni e/o hanno pubblicato “Che mangino caos”, “Resta te stessa” e “Antichi nuovi di zecca”.

On August 6, 2020 Tempest communicated in a post on their social profiles their non-binary gender identity, their new name, and their pronouns they/them, but when in 2017 for the first time we heard Europe is lost their name was still Kate.
Rapper, poet, playwright, writer, and performer, this year they were awarded with the silver lion for theater. Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte write: “for the luminous audacity in placing explosive reflective triggers and for still wanting to experiment in a defined niche genre, such as poetry, mixing the courtly with the bass, anger with the sweetness of affections – between sharp lines and rhymes of Shakespearean memory and with a strong social content, classic myths and hip hop hybrids – coming to speak from the heart to an ever wider audience, getting into your bones, forcing yourself to look at yourself in your painful intimacy “.

Il libro è diviso in capitoli, ognuno dei quali legato a una parola chiave e a un caso studio: si va da The Sims a Civilization passando per Deus Ex e Vice City. Ogni volta che ci troviamo in macchina assieme, per un viaggio che sia sufficientemente lungo, abbiamo una sorta di rituale che consiste nell’ascoltare le reciproche Discover Weekly di Spotify e di commentare ogni pezzo un po’ come se fossimo ad una degustazione.
Nonostante di viaggi quest’anno se ne siano fatti gran pochi, mi piace mantenere quest’abitudine e ho capito che, seppur in modo disorganizzato, per quanto io abbia cercato di addestrare l’algoritmo, mi rendo conto che prima che le macchine riescano a capirmi, c’è ancora un po’ di strada da fare.
Qualche settimana fa finalmente mi ha proposto uno di quei pezzi che capisci subito che non ti lasceranno mai più. Un’opera eterna, composta nel 1977 da Arvo Pärt in seguito ad una pausa di 8 anni, durante la quale si avvicinò al barocco e al canto gregoriano e che gli permise di sviluppare il suo stile compositivo, il tintinnabuli. “Potrei paragonare la mia musica alla luce bianca che contiene tutti i colori, solo un prisma può dividere i colori e farli apparire, questo prisma potrebbe essere lo spirito dell’ascoltatore”.

Whenever we are traveling together, for a journey that is long enough, we have a sort of ritual that consists in listening to the reciprocal Discover Weekly of Spotify and commenting on each piece as if we were at a tasting.
Although very few trips have been made this year, I still like to keep this habit. I realized that, even if in a disorganized way, I tried to train the algorithm and I understood that before machines will be able to understand me, there is still a little way to go.
A few weeks ago it finally offered me one of those pieces that you immediately understand that they will never leave you. An eternal work, composed in 1977 by Arvo Pärt following an 8-year break, during which he approached the Baroque and Gregorian chant and which allowed him to develop his own compositional style, the tintinnabuli. “I could compare my music to the white light that contains all the colors, only a prism can divide the colors and make them appear, this prism could be the listener’s spirit”.

Oggi parliamo di un’artista che non necessita di introduzioni: Hito Steyerl.
The Wretched of the Screen è una raccolta di saggi uscita nel 2012 in cui Steyerl mette a fuoco una vera e propria politica delle immagini, dove gli schermi giocano un ruolo centrale: è infatti al loro interno che ritroviamo le speranze e i desideri di progetti politici collettivi oppure il controverso rapporto tra politica e rappresentazione. 
Contrariamente a quello che si potrebbe pensare, questo libro va giù come l’acqua: Steyerl scrive da dio e vi tiene incollati alla pagina. Si muove con una disinvoltura tra i frammenti e le distorsioni del capitalismo per parlarvi del dispiegamento della violenza come strategia di governo o del sistema dell’arte come di una grande macchina per lo sfruttamento del lavoro, o ancora dello spam che si accumula nelle vostre caselle di posta elettronica. The Wretched of the Screen è stata la bussola con cui ci siamo orientati, tra teoria e storytelling, nel pensiero contemporaneo su immagini e politica.

Let’s talk about one of those artists who don’t need introductions: Hito Steyerl.
The Wretched of the Screen is a collection of landmark essays published in 2012, in which Steyerl develops the main traits of her politics of images, based on the screen as the place where the desires and hopes for collective and coherent politics appear. Contrary to what the weight of the topic may suggest, it is a really enjoyable reading: Steyerl is a brilliant writer and she keeps you literally glued to the page. She moves with a rare ease between the fragments and the distortions of capitalism. She’s able to talk of the deployment of violence as government strategy or about the dark side of the art world and its exploitation mechanisms, or about the spam accumulating in your mailbox. And every time you’re there, fascinated, listening to what she’s saying. The Wretched of the Screen is a book where theory and storytelling merge, a compendium with the basics of the contemporary thought about images and politics.

Foto al mare, foto in montagna, foto al ristorante, selfie, selfie, selfie, foodporn, orologi, gioielli, supercar, aerei privati, dati, dati, dati… Se c’è una cosa in cui Instagram ci ha aiutati, è a far schiattare di invidia i nostri follower o almeno a provarci. La nostra privacy sembra sia diventata la moneta di scambio perfetta per raggiungere quei famosi e tanto agognati “15 minuti di fama”, ma se c’è qualcuno che non vedremo mai ostentare la propria ricchezza si tratta proprio di chi veramente ricco lo è.
Way Out nasce anche da questa riflessione, dal tentativo di creare una “bolla di invisibilità”, perché, in un mondo di ipersorveglianza dove l’accumulo di dati è la più grande fonte di ricchezza forse il vero lusso è proprio diventare invisibili.

Seaside photos, mountain photos, restaurant photos, selfies, selfies, selfies, foodporn, watches, jewels, supercars, private planes, datas, datas, datas… If there is one thing that instagram has helped us to do, it is to make everyone die with envy or at least to try. Our privacy seems to have become the perfect bargaining chip to reach those famous and coveted “15 minutes of fame”, but if there is someone we will never see flaunting their wealth, those are the truly rich one.
Way Out arises also from this reflection, from the attempt to create a “bubble of invisibility”, because, in a world of oversurveillance where the accumulation of data is the greatest source of wealth, perhaps the real luxury is to become invisible.

Four Times Through The Labyrinth è un libro uscito nel 2012 per Spector Books. Un libro scarno. Essenziale. Ogni pagina è uguale: contiene una foto e qualche riga di testo. Ci sono solo 4 capitoli, che corrispondono ad altrettante conferenze sul tema del labirinto. Fine. Eppure, nella sua disarmante semplicità è una bomba, che vi fa capire cosa significa una lecture con tutti i crismi. Ma questa è la considerazione più ovvia. Continue reading →

È una raccolta di saggi sorprendente, 3 libri più un manuale, nata dal programma espositivo dell’HKW di Berlino tra il 2013 e il 2014, intitolato “The Anthropocene Project”. Grana, vapore e fasci di luce sono le tre chiavi di lettura con cui i curatori del progetto hanno analizzato i processi che stanno modificando l’aspetto della Terra, nei quali si intersecano il flusso della materia, le conversioni energetiche e l’attività umana.
