When Italian former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi bought a poodle as gift for Francesca Pascale, his new girlfriend, the sells of poodles in all Italy increased of about 20%. Dudù, as the dog was named, became in less than a year a celebrity and many gossip magazines dedicated articles to his life, tastes and love stories.
Although the dog and hist sister (Dudina) have been recently removed from Berlusconi’s house in Arcore – to avoid the risk of infections because of the politician’s health problems – the dog remained one of the symbols of the particular way of making politics Italian have been subjected to in the last thirty years. It is particularly interesting to compare the decrease of freedom of expression in Italy to the rise of Right wing parties and the creation of an entertainment industry based on the privatization of telecommunication.
